EXAM SOFTWARE FAQ
Where to get the exam software: www.exam4.com
Common Problems:
- Sometimes the student’s laptop can’t pass the security check and/or the exam can’t be submitted successfully even though they’ve re-logged on to the network. Solution: Make sure that all their anti-virus software (Norton, McAfee) is disabled. McAffe is a little tricky and has its own section (at the end)
What to do if the laptop crashes in the middle of an exam and the student wants to continue typing
1. Open the software.
2. When it asks whether to start a new exam or select previous exam, click on start new exam. We’ll come back to the first part at the end, when you’re not worried about the time.
3. Where it asks for your exam ID number, type in your blind grading exam number, followed by the letterA
For example, your exam number is 1485, you should type in 1485A
4 . Follow the rest of the steps as though you were starting a new exam and finish typing your exam. You may want to type PART TWO at the beginning, just to let your professor know that there is another part of your exam.
5. At the end of the exam, click on End Exam on the menu at the top and then submit your exam electronically.
6. Exit out of the exam software.
7. Re-open the exam software, and when you come to the screen where it asks if you want to start a new exam or select a previous exam, click on select previous exam. Highlight the exam that you haven’t submitted - the one without the “A” at the end of your exam number - and submit it electronically.
8. Exit the exam software.
9. Relax. Or start studying for your next exam.
Error 317 or Error 6 Messages:
Advisory - When starting an exam, a small number of students may receive a Security Check violation of “firewall error 317″. They should be directed to re-download Exam4. Confirm the operating system is Windows XP and that on reinstallation they are now running Exam4 release 7.5a (indicated on top left of startup screens).
The McAfee Security Problem (which keeps them from submitting an exam successfully)
Go to the start menu, control panel.
Once in the control panel select administrative tools. Then select services. Maximize the screen size and scroll down the list of services until you see McAfee Firewall Security service on the left side of the list. You will see its status should be listed by default as started. You will now right click on this item and select stop service. Once it is stopped you should now be able to run the exam software properly. Please remember that when you reboot the computer this service will start again. So you will have to do this for each exam if you have restarted the computer in between exams. If you wanted to disable this service during the entire exam period you can go to the same line and right click on the Firewall service and select properties. In the general field you will see startup type. To disable the firewall permanently select disable. You can come back any time to this service and change it back to automatic after exams.
