And you thought things were crazy here at UB during exams….

Well, the atmosphere here at UB is nowhere near as crazy as at some other lawschools.  In fact, the other law school in our fair city got lenghty write-up in this regard. Ah, exam time.

Ponderings

I wonder how many more months it will take for them to fix the urinals in the law llibrary? The one on the 3rd floor has been out of order for over 2 months and the one on the 4th floor for a month an a half.

New! New! New!

2 new printer-related notices from OTS:

1. The printers in the computer lab now have double-sided printing capability. The instructions are posted on the lab doors, and there is a print-out with instructions at the library’s Information Desk.

2. Even better, students can now add printer pages online, rather than having to call OTS. Look for the “Additional Printer Pages” box on your  MyUB portal page.

One library system to rule them all

In Challenge to ILS Industry, OCLC Extends WorldCat Local To Launch New Library System. This is big news. And here I thought merely shifting our local online catalog to WorldCat Local was a big deal.

Libraries and Facebook

The Law Librarian Blog reports on a study by librarians at Valparaiso on the attitudes of students toward libraries’ use of Facebook. The biggest concerns are those regarding mixing of private/work/library spheres. This is of particular interest to me, because I manage our library’s Facebook page.

New Copier/Microforms Setup

The configuration on the replacement copiers (due week of January 5) will be: two on the third floor and one on the fourth floor.  There will be a card dispenser on the third floor (in the copier alcove with the copiers).

The public pc printer and one of the microform reader/printers will also send print jobs to the copiers via a “print release station” with attached card reader near the public terminals (about where the print station is now, but without the printer).

This means the microform reader will build a print job on an attached PC, then send it to the print release station for payment, which will then send it to the copiers for printing.  This is kind of involved, but the best set-up we can get.  (The current reader that is attached to a networked PC will stay the same—with PDF files saved to disk/or drive, or emailed.  We will convert one of the older readers to the print system, and probably D&D the other one).

The three copiers will all be networked.  One or both of the third floor copiers will receive print jobs from the public terminals and reader/printers.  All will be set up to work as scanners as well as copiers, with an option to email the scans—thus the need for the network connection for all three.  The card dispenser will either be networked or connected to a phone line via modem (the company is looking into the options), and will ONLY take credit and debit cards.  We will not have a cash option on the copy cards.
